Human rights are moral rights and freedoms that belong to everyone simply by reason of being human. They include the right to life, liberty and a decent human experience as well as all of the political, social, and economic rights necessary for people to live dignified lives. In Canada these rights are protected both by specific laws (for example, anti-discrimination laws) and by our constitution.

Alberta Resources
This blog post clarifies the current law in terms of the human rights of residential tenants in Alberta, identifies concerns about a lack of effective protection of tenants’ human rights at the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service, and suggests that lawyers and advocates working in this area should ask questions to determine if discrimination is occurring and, if so, make their clients aware of their rights and how they can protect them.

The Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre (ACLRC) has worked with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) communities for over 20 years.
