Legal Collections and Libraries
Listed on this page are libraries that provide law-related information. Many offer materials and databases that can be accessed online as well as online catalogues of their materials. They may also provide legal reference services and other research assistance.
Alberta
Part of the Alberta Court Services is access to the Alberta Law Libraries. The primary mission of Alberta Law Libraries is to facilitate access to legal information for the Alberta community, including its judiciary, lawyers, citizens, libraries and government agencies. Alberta Law Libraries (ALL) were formed in 2009 when Alberta Court Libraries and Alberta Law Society Libraries were amalgamated. ALL has served the legal community in Alberta since 1885 and use of our collections is free to all who visit our libraries.

The Environmental Law Centre (Alberta) Society ("ELC") is a registered charitable organization incorporated in Alberta in 1982 to provide Albertans with an objective source of information about environmental and natural resources law. The ELC website includes fact sheets, downloadable publications and a frequently asked questions section. The ELC library is accessible to the public; the catalogue can be accessed on their website. As well, any person can contact the ELC and receive information on environmental law.

British Columbia
Courthouse Libraries BC is a non-profit organization providing legal information services to the legal community and the public of BC. A broad range of library services are offered including research guides and tutorials and an answered questions archive.

The UBCIC Resource Centre is an archives and library with a specialized collection focusing on BC land rights research. It serves all BC First Nations researchers who have a Band Council Resolution (BCR) to conduct research on behalf of a First Nation.

Canada / Federal
The Canadian Association of Law Libraries (CALL) currently has approximately 500 members representing a wide variety of law library interests across Canada. It provides a forum for the exchange of information and ideas among members, fosters cooperation among Canadian law libraries, and plays an active role in promoting access to legal information for all Canadians.

Anyone can access and share the latest research, policy and best practices associated with alleviating homelessness and housing instability.

This Library is housed in the offices of the Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA) in Toronto. The website contains the catalogue of the collection database, including numerous topical research files. The collection reflects the multidisciplinary nature of many environmental issues with a focus on environmental law and policy and includes access to the publications of the former Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy. Researchers who are unable to visit our library may call and request some materials from the collection or receive advice on other locations where they may be found.

The Library of the Supreme Court of Canada provides the research base for the Court in its role of deciding questions of national importance. It is a research library geared to meet the immediate information needs of the Court. The Library has an extensive collection of both primary and secondary materials from the major common and civil law jurisdictions: Canada, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, New Zealand, France and Belgium; a large collection of legal periodicals, loose-leaf services and major legal texts.

The Audiovisual Library is a unique, multimedia resource that consists of three sections: a Historic Archives, a Lecture Series, and a Research Library.

The World Legal Information Institute (WorldLII) is a free, independent and non-profit global legal research facility developed collaboratively by Legal Information Institutes and other organisations. WorldLII comprises three main facilities: Databases, Catalog and Websearch. The Databases include case-law, legislation, treaties, law reform reports, law journals, and other materials (1165 databases from 123 jurisdictions via 14 Legal Information Institutes). The WorldLII Catalog provides links to over 15,000 law-related web sites in every country in the world. Websearch makes searchable the full text of as many of these sites as WorldLII's web-spider can reach.

Manitoba
The primary goal of the Library is to support the teaching and research mission of the Faculty of Law and to support academic programmes and research of other faculties and departments at the University of Manitoba. The library is, however, open to alumni of the university and to members of the general public. An annual fee is charged for borrowing privileges for individuals who are not students or staff of the University. New Brunswick
This library serves the faculty, staff, and students of the University of New Brunswick, Faculty of Law, as well as the rest of the UNB community. Service is also offered, in so far as licensing agreements and policies allow, to UNB alumni, members of the legal profession, and the general public. Legal information is available in a variety of formats, and the website has been designed as a quick and convenient legal information portal. These libraries serve members of the Society and the judiciary from 12 different locations in the province. The public may access library collections and have reference service where full time staff is available, but only members of the Society and judiciary have borrowing privileges. The York University Law Library is located in the Osgoode Hall Law School (Toronto). The library has the largest law collection in all of Canada. Other Country
The Public Library of Law (PLoL) is an online database of U.S. laws. PLoL provides access to a wide variety of legal resources for legal professionals and the general public alike. PLoL is a free service, but an initial registration is required. Registered PLoL user will have free access to the state law of all 50 States, the Supreme and Appellate Court cases from 1997 to the present, Constitutions from all 50 states, Court Rules from all 50 States, Regulations and Administrative Codes from selected states, all U.S. Supreme Court Cases, all Federal Circuit Courts from 1950 to the present, the United States Code, U.S. Code of Federal Regulations and Federal Court Rules.

Prince Edward Island
The Society owns and operates libraries of legal materials in two locations. Primary service is provided to members of the Law Society, Articled Clerks, and Judges and staff at the courthouse. The Charlottetown location is available to the public every weekday afternoon and every Thursday morning, or by prior arrangement with the Librarian. The website provides additional details about services and listings of available materials.

The Nahum Gelber Law Library at McGill University has a collection of over 180,000 volumes of statutes, regulations, law reports, treatises, books, journals and other legal material. Anyone can visit the library and use services free of charge and can access resources on the library computers using a guest log-in, but a membership must be purchased to borrow materials. Yukon
Open to all members of the public, the library is located in the Law Courts building in Whitehorse. The Yukon Public Law Library serves lawyers, government employees and the general public. The emphasis of the library collection is Canadian law, and includes statutes, caselaw, texts, and legal periodicals. The library also carries publications on English law.
