Complaint and advocacy services deal with situations where people feel they are being treated unfairly. Sometimes they help individuals to work out their problems, sometimes they work to make the system work better or to push for changes in society.

Alberta

Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women (IAAW)


The Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women is a non-profit organization that advocates on behalf of Aboriginal Women and is currently involved in many activities for the benefit of Alberta Aboriginal Women. The IAAW works to achieve social justice for Aboriginal women by: Researching and developing resource materials; Identifying opportunities to participate in policy development and decision making with the municipal, provincial, federal governments; and Challenging and eradicating discrimination of Aboriginal women.

West Coast Women's Legal Education and Action Fund (West Coast LEAF)


West Coast LEAF's concept of equality does not mean 'equality as sameness,' but rather equality as the removal and disappearance of discrimination and disadvantage which is consistent with Charter equality rights. West Coast LEAF carries out its work by conducting equality rights litigation, primarily using the Charter of Rights and Freedom, by advocating for law reform, and by carrying out related public legal education.

Canadian Human Rights Commission


The Commission's business is to make the Canadian Human Rights Act work for the benefit of all Canadians. Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP


The Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP is an independent federal agency established in 1988 to review public complaints about the conduct of RCMP members in a fair and impartial manner. Anyone, including a non-citizen, who has a concern about the conduct of an RCMP member can make a complaint. You do not have to be directly involved in the incident; you can make a complaint on behalf of someone else, or as a witness to an incident.

Federation of Law Societies of Canada


The Federation of Law Societies of Canada (FLSC) is the national coordinating body of the Canada’s 14 law societies mandated to regulate Canada’s 95,000 lawyers and Quebec’s 3,500 notaries.  Each law society governs the legal profession within their respective province or territory and, as such, is reponsible for dealing with complaints from the public about the profession. National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS)


The National Educational Association of Disabled Students is a consumer organization, with a mandate to encourage the self-empowerment of post-secondary students with disabilities. Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI)

Advocacy Centre for The Elderly (ACE)


The Advocacy Centre for the Elderly is a community based legal clinic for low income senior citizens. ACE is managed by a volunteer board of directors at least half of whom are seniors. ACE is funded through Legal Aid Ontario and is the first legal clinic in Canada to specialize in the legal problems of seniors. ACE provides direct legal services to low-income seniors, public legal education, and engages in law reform activities. ACE services and activities are in relation to areas of law of special importance to the seniors' population.

Income Security Advocacy Centre (ISAC)


ISAC was established in 2001 by Legal Aid Ontario to serve low income Ontarians by conducting test case and Charter litigation relating to provincial and federal income security programs. These programs include Ontario Works (OW), the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), (un)Employment Insurance, and the Canada Pension Plan (CPP).
